Stuttering at school: a five-step guide for teachers

The below guide was originally published in Danish based on an interview with me for Folkeskolen, the Danish teachers’ magazine. It is meant for teachers and educators in the early school years, but they are absolutely adoptable for older children as well.
The 5th step will look a bit different for older children, though. The focus of the treatment will be on managing permanent stuttering, and referral is recommended when the stutter is hindering the child or young person (think physical tension, ‘talking around’ certain sounds or words, expressing emotions such as frustration or shame, avoiding certain speaking situations or conversation partners, …).
